Heard in the Classroom--Journal Edition

We grade students' journals about once per month. These entries (all from the same student) were particularly entertaining to me.  [I left the spelling as-is.]

What has been your experience with funerals?

My experience with funerals are that every one is sad and, I hate them. Also, I've been to two of them. And the only thing I like about funerals is the food.

Compare your house to the McNabb's [from Maniac McGee]
My house compared to the McNabb's is nothing like his. My house is a little messy but his house is horrible, sericly. Also, my house doesn't have rats.

How do you like 6th grade so far?
How I like 6th grade so far is that you arnt stuck in just one room for the hole day.  Also, you learn French and spanish in all the grades, I think.  Sixth grade also has funny teachers and only when you get them mad they get stricted.

Pretty funny, huh?  I'll try to remember how charming my students are when I work til 7:30pm tonight (Student-Led Conferences).

Sundays in My City

Lately, it's been snowy our neck of the woods, and I'm quite happy about it.
I always say that if it's going to be cold, we might as well have snow.
When I'm not keeping both hands on the wheel to stay on the road
during my daily commute on country roads,
I'm pulling over to take shots like this one...

Last night, we got 4-5 more inches of the beautiful white stuff. It floated down in big, fluffy flakes...

A little while ago, I mentioned that Cooper likes to make snow angels,
and since Lisleman (I think) asked for pics,
I took my camera out with the dog last night, hoping he would oblige me,
and I'm thrilled to say that he did! Here's Cooper,
rolling in the snow like a pig in slop!

And here's his masterpiece!

In case you can't make it out, I've outlined it for you here...

Pretty ironic, isn't it? Cooper, a snow angel?

Saturday Sampling, January 29th, 2011

I truly love Saturdays, don't you?  I get to "curl up and catch up" with some of the best posts in Blogland each week. This week, I'm posting an oldy-but-goody post written for my blog by my sister, Mary. Interview in My Underwear is a sweet post that many of us who could stand to lose weight can relate to this time of year.

Now it's your turn--Link up your favorites from this week (or earlier), one of your own, and any number of others--The more the merrier.  [To read the specifics on SS, click on the tab above.]

Friday Fragments, Episode #131

If you've made it this far (Friday), you're home free!! Welcome to the weekend, Baby! I suppose if you work this weekend, that might not be as encouraging. If not, here's to a day off soon! :)  As for me, I am ready to unload my randomness!

**I'm going to write a book! That's all I'm going to say about that right now, but now that I've put it out there, there's no going back. I am SO excited!  Anyone know a trustworthy, talented literary agent?

**Just so you know, I'm very often tempted to "Like" your blog posts. However, because my Facebook name is private, I've learned not to do so; it's nothing personal :)

**I guess if I'm gonna a write a book, I might have to consider blogging with my real name. Naah! I like Mrs.4444.  And no, I can't use Mrs.4444 as a pen name--That would be inappropriate for this book. (Sorry--That's the only hint you're getting for now.)

**You may not realize it, but Green Bay Packer fans consider the Minnesota Vikings to be arch rivals (even moreso than the Chicago Bears, I think). So, it is a little ironic that at school, my homeroom drew "Minneapolis" for the city we will represent in our upcoming "6th grade Winter Olympics" day of outdoor fun.  We have to make a huge banner representing Minneapolis, and we have to do a great job. (We want a gold medal in the banner category, of course!) Never thought I'd see the day that I cheer for Minnesota, haha. :)

**I read a couple hundred comments this week (Yes, I was a little behind). If you didn't hear from me, it might be because you showed up as a "No Reply" commenter. I don't usually take the time to go looking for email addresses; I love you, but I'm not in love with you enough to beg for it. Sorry.

**Shell, of Things I Can't Say once wrote an excellent piece called Blog Newbie?, and I highly recommend it. (It addresses that No-Reply comment issue, among other enlightening blogging topics for the new, but also the seasoned blogger who needs a reminder.  In fact, that part about reciprocal reading/commenting stung me a little bit, but I had it coming. Just like Shell to tell it like it is in a firm, yet kind way. Thanks, Shell.

**Did you catch my talking-Cooper post yesterday? It's pretty cute and very short.Check it out if you need to smile.

**Steven Tyler--I never noticed him, really, before American Idol, and I absolutely love him. Then again, I have extensive experience working with emotionally disturbed individuals; his quirkiness is very endearing to me.

**Okay, I'll get out of your way so you can link up here.[Remember, though, this link is for the few, the proud, the fragmenters (only). Other links will be deleted.] [To learn more about Friday Fragments, click on the tab at the top of this page.]

A Boy and His Dog

Our golden retriever, Cooper, really loves his boy.  He misses Kyle when he's away at school, so when he was home over the holiday break, Cooper appreciated spending time with him.  Half-way through this video, he even tells him so!  [You can fast forward to about one minute if you're the impatient type, but the whole video is less than 2 minutes.  I have to figure out how to edit it down!]

Okay, I figured it out! Here's the 10-second clip!

video

As I type this, Mr.4444 and I just finished bathing Cooper after two days (and nights)
"consequences" of his Sunday morning self-serve "breakfast" of Ranch-flavored Corn Nuts
and a pound of ready-to-eat almonds.

That dog is lucky he's charming once in a while...

What do dogs in Wisconsin do to pass the time during cold winter months?  Some (like Cooper) like to make snow angels. Many sit in living room windows and wait longingly for UPS guy to bark at.  Others, I'm sure, simply laze around all day, waiting for the dog days of summer. My sister, Michelle's dog, Dozer, likes to go snowmobiling. Yes, really--he does. Or doesn't. What do you think?

Another Fun Run!

Well, as you probably know, the Packers will be representing the NFC in the Super Bowl in a couple of weeks. Last week, when we beat Atlanta, I joined Mr.4444 and Kendall in our traditional, run-around-the-house-outside-in-your-bare-feet tradition. This week, I got cold feet (haha) and let everyone else do it. And in a surprising turn of events, Grandma 4444 even joined in! At 74 years of age, however, she did a modified version. Go Grandma Pat!

WOO HOO!! THE GREEN BAY PACKERS HAVE MADE IT TO THE SUPER BOWL!!!

My own mom has been sick with a bad cold lately, so she couldn't join us today. Who knows, though, maybe she'll join us for the Super Bowl and will happily run around the house with us! (Yes, I promise I will suffer through it again, if/when the Packers win.)

In the meantime, I'm hoping for a an early spring thaw...

Feelin' Fly Like a Cheesehead

Just a little levity to take the edge off of pregame stress! Careful--the tune is catchy. (And no, I don't have a cheesehead hat; contrary to popular belief, everyone in Wisconsin does not own a cheesehead hat.)

GO PACK!

Saturday Sampling, January 22, 2010

If you've ever snuggled into the sweet pillowy goodness of a mother's (or grandmother's) bosom, you will love Pillow Talk, from An Inch of Gray. I was also very moved recently by the beautiful In My Arms post, by Weaselmomma, who lost her sweet baby, Claire several years ago and wrote about the heartwrenching days that followed. These posts are more than worth your time, I assure you, and I look forward to your offerings.

I still haven't caught up with the gems of the last Saturday Sampling, but as soon as I get finished entering grades (which I've been doing all night!), I will happily jump into the fray and soak up all the goodness!

Enjoy! [If you haven't already, please read the Saturday Sampling details, found in the tab above. Thanks.]

Friday Fragments, Episode #130!

Welcome! Gather 'round the fireplace/fragment place--It's COLD out there! If our fragments were pieces of firewood, we could have one heck of a blaze (and after seeing the weather report, I'm thinking we'll need them!)

***It is so much easier to take winter when the football season gets stretched an extra 2-3 weeks. Thank you, Green Bay Packers! Our fireplace doesn't hurt, either.  Right now, outside, it is five degrees F, with a windchill factor of 11 degrees below zero.  The high tomorrow is supposed to be six degrees. Sadly, that's cold enough to get the dog to take care of his business in a hurry, but not cold enough to close school.

***It's been 13 years since the Packers played in the Super Bowl.  Come Monday, all Packers fans will be either really, really happy or really, really bummed out.  Go PACK!

***When I turned on my phone after school yesterday, I received a text from Mr.4444.  It read, "I just got an x-ray. CT scan is scheduled for Friday. When I fell on the garage steps...I'm not worried about my back--I think I broke my f-in hand!"  So, I was like What?! You fell on the steps? You're at the hospital?! WTH?!"  I replied via text and tried to call him, but he didn't reply. Was he really in the hospital? Why didn't I know that he had fallen on the steps? When did this happen?!  Fortunately, after several minutes, I remembered that when Mr.4444 had forwarded a text to me recently, it didn't show up as such. On a hunch, I called my SIL and learned that it indeed was a forwarded text, from Mr.4444's brother. (Mr.4444 had not replied because he was on an airplane.)  Poor Bob!

***I have learned so much this week at work--Technology is an amazing, amazing thing, but keeping up with it is exhausting, isn't it?  That said, I'm so excited to be learning Prezi, Jing, and getting my own LiveScribe Echo pen to use in the classroom.  Now, if someone could just find a way to slow the speed on the Information Highway so that I could catch up a little, I'd appreciate it! Thanks.

***This has been one of the busiest work weeks I've had in months, really--Just one thing after another...busy-busy-busy. Nothing horrible at all, just an incredible number of commitments and tasks.  I am so grateful for weekends!  I hope that you, too, get some R&R this weekend. Why not start by unloading your own fragments and linking up here:

Job Security

Today, during a little free-time before the end of the day, a student asked if he could play on the computer, and I consented. A couple of minutes later, he still wasn't on the webpage he wanted.

"Mrs.4444," he asked.  "How do you spell beeummex?"

What?

"'Beeummex. How do you spell it?"

Um...B-M-X?    [And yes, I did keep a straight face.]

"Oh, yeahhh.... Thanks."

Sure hope he wears a helmet....

Tech Tuesday

This is very hodge-podgy, but before I share the tech, I'm going to share the wreck that is my holiday shopping experience (first and last) with The Bradford Exchange.  As mentioned previously, I ordered three separate items for Grandma 4444's Christmas and January birthday. The first came within a week but was not of good quality and had to be returned. The second came the day before Christmas and fell apart in my hands (I returned it and have yet to receive credit). The third item, while perfectly nice, arrived the Monday after Christmas, even though I ordered in on December 13th and was promised delivery by Christmas. Today, I spent 17 minutes on hold, waiting for an operator. When she answered, I kindly told her that I think 17 minutes is an unreasonable time to wait for "Customer Service," and she assured me that was a "standard" wait time. Okay, so I guess I have to just keep waiting for my refund. I figure I will keep complaining about it here until I get some kind of satisfaction. Thanks for letting me vent!

On to the tech!

I found some new apps for the iPad/iPhone recently, and I know at least some of you will find them very useful.

Sound Note-Wonderful tool for taking notes in school, at work, etc. Records sound as you put key words on the page. Later, click on one of your key words, and it will take you directly to the place in the recording in which you wrote it. [To answer Lisleman's question, I don't have students using it yet--I'm still figuring the thing out myself! However, I am positive I'll be having kids taking notes soon and will let you know how it goes.]

2Do Tasks in Style-This is an organizer that my 5th grade nephew showed me. (Thanks, Logan!)  It's fantastic! It cost $5.99 and is worth well worth it.  [And yes, Lisleman, I am SO organized, that my posts have begun publishing themselves without my knowledge lately. It's amazing, really.]
All Recipes-Awesome. Love the graphics. It's free, but the coolest features cost money. Enter the number of servings you're going to make, and it adjusts the amounts of the ingredients automatically. Who needs math anymore?! [shhhhh! Don't tell my students!]  All Recipes also has a great website to use if you don't have need for apps. In fact, my sister Michelle made this absolutely wonderful Baked Potato Salad recntly, and I highly, highly recommend it!

Crazy, crazy, crazy busy with work/snow/life these days. Thanks for stopping by to say hi! :)

Angry Artist?

Does this look like the face of a maladjusted artist? One never knows....

When my sister, Michelle, sent this story in an email a couple of years ago, I knew I had to ask her to allow me to share it. Enjoy today's "Guest Post"....

I was reading 7-year-old Caden's poems that he brought home from school today; adorable poems about Star Wars, ice cream, furry dogs, loving his mom, and bald eagles. Imagine how the proud smile disappeared from my face when I saw this drawing of an angry man:

My son is in first grade!! I was completely shocked, as he is the kind of boy whose worst "f-word" is FART! That man is flipping the bird!?!

And did you notice how the hand has black scribbled over it? OMG! My shock soon turned to embarassment as I imagined his teacher seeing that horrible finger and covering it up with pencil before sending it home. Then, I was even more upset; why didn't the teacher call me to tell me he had drawn such a thing?

I tried to remain calm. I approached Caden with a tone I couldn't fully supress, "Caden, what is this? Please explain this to me."

"The man was watching a show about bald eagles on TV. He REALLY loves bald eagles. The show ended, and he got MAD. He yells RRRrrrrrr, and he has the remote. He shut the TV off, and it went Beep! off, and he stomped away."

Based upon my incorrect interpretation, I can now infer that I am either losing faith in Caden's purity or I just have a completely foul mind. (Either one is not appealing.) Now I just hope that his teacher asked him the same questions that I did. I'm guessing that since the principal hasn't called, all is well. For now...

Sundays in My City

Sundays in My city is weekly blog theme hosted by Unknown Mami, who always has incredible photos from her city, San Francisco. My photos sometimes lack the cultural flare that San Francisco offers, but today, I think I might have some cultural entertainment to rival San Francisco!

Okay, you know those moms who take kids to the pool but never step in the water? Those moms who take all the photos but don't really participate in all the "fun" stuff their kids and husband do together? I must confess, I am often that mom. When Mr.4444 and the kids celebrate New Year's Eve by running around the house (outside) in their bare feet, I am cozy and warm, taking the pictures. So, tonight, when Mr.4444 suggested we bring the tradition out to celebrate the Green Bay Packers victory over the Atlanta Falcons, I tried to decline, but with Kyle gone out for the night, I felt some pressure to pick up the slack  Especially since our neighbor, Pat, volunteered to do the videotaping, I really had no leg to stand on, so I consented. That's right--I took one for the team.

Because I know you want to see this kind of insanity in action, I'm going to share the video.

Dare I hope we beat the Bears next week?

Friday Fragments, Episode #129

I've been trying to make it home before dark after school, so that I can finally get an updated shot of my favorite tree on my commute (see header), but I just can't make it, due to Kendall's musical rehearsals every night.  Fortunately (or not), my mind continues to fragment, regardless of lighting conditions, so I'm totally prepared today. Welcome. [To learn more about Friday fragments, click on the tab above.]
The Packers are in the NFL Playoffs! What a thrill! It might be because I sang the Packer Fight Song like 42 times on Sunday, but more than likely, it was because we dragged Kendall into the livingroom for the last two minutes of the game (she wins everything). Regardless, I'm fired up and will post the fight song for your listening pleasure soon. and hope to one day see my webcam up and working again, so that I can share the fight song with you! :)
Anyone whose ever potty trained a preschooler will appreciate this Facebook status update from my co-worker, Tina:

I think it's hilarious every time I hear nick say, "Don't you remember? It's a new year, so you're supposed to go on the potty!"

Nice try, Nick. I don't miss those days...
While looking for my little Packers graphic, I found an obscure little blog called The Wearing of the Green (and Gold) on which all posts relate to the Packers uniform. If you want to make some guy's day, pop over there and leave a comment :)
Love dolphins? I like them and all, but I've never swum* with them or anything. After watching the powerful, Academy Award-Winning documentary, The Cove, on Saturday, I'm sure I never will take up the popular tourist activity. The film (especially the last 30 minutes) was very eye-opening. I watched it via Netflix instant-view (which costs nothing if you have an account). I have a great respect for the many people who risked their personal safety to get the word out about how 23,000 dolphins are being slaughtered in Japan every year.
*Yes, I did look up the corrrect verb tense for "swum,"and I still think it looks wierd, don't you?

Yes, I like documentaries.  I also watched a short one called China's Lost Girls, with Lisa Ling, produced by National Geographic. What can I say? I like learning about stuff.
Have you backed up your blog lately? It's important, you know. I don't wanna hear you bawling because your blog crashed and you didn't have it backed up. It's so easy and takes less than 5 minutes.

Two days after I drafted the previous fragment, my laptop croaked. Ask me if I backed up my files lately. (no)
If you missed my Saturday Sampling post last weekend, you really should bookmark it; there were an incredible number of posts really worth the read.
Kendall (age 15 now) has chosen her solo and ensemble song for this year. It's ancient, and I don't really understand the words (though they are in English). Still, she sounds like an angel singing I Attempt from Love's Sickness [to Fly].  Mr.4444 and I look forward to hearing this song at least 100 times in the next two months :)
Finally, while riding in the car last night, Kendall commented on a commercial for a magical cure for age spots....

"I'm sorry, but if you're old enough to have brown spots on your hands, that really shouldn't be your priority; it should be living."

LOLOL!  Fortunately, she finished her thought with...

"You know--your priority should be having fun with your grandkids and stuff."

Sure, Kendall; I'm sure that's what you meant...

**It's your turn to unload now--Link up your Friday Fragments post and meet up with some new friends! [Sorry. Links to non-ff posts will be deleted.]

In Case You Need to Laugh

My niece posted this photo of my mom on Facebook this week. You can't help but smile when you look at it.

(81 years old and still a kid! And yes, that is a wig.)

It reminded me of My Mom is Crazy (in a Good Way), in which I posted this video of Mom and her "Stumblebum" friends, entertaining at a local nursing home.  In case you need to laugh (with her or at her--She wouldn't care either way :) I thought I'd share it again....

Have a great day!

In Which I Learn to Respect Tortoises

Okay, so I mentioned last week that I once competed in the McDonald's Decathlon.  Today, I'll tell you how that experience taught me a lesson I have never forgotten.

In 1984, McDonald's (capitalizing on Winter Olympics fever) announced that it was holding "Decathlons" all over the country.  Rather than bobsledding and skiing, though, we'd be competing in...get ready...burger flipping, drive-thru service, "lot-and-lobby," etc.  We had to not only perform efficiently at each station but remember miscellaneous details like the temperature of the fry oil, griddle, etc.  A young college student, I was used to memorizing stuff, and I had fun at my job, so I decided to go for it.

To make a long story shorter... I did well at my store and earned the opportunity to compete in the Northeast Wisconsin Upper-Michigan Regionals.  Quit laughing--It was a big deal to some people, including (apparently) the owner of our store, because he's the one who drove me to the competition a couple weeks later, some place in Michigan (I think).  The ride there was a little awkward for me; aside from the fact that I was an insecure young woman, I was riding in a van with a guy I didn't even know. He was a store owner going to a lot of trouble; I hoped I would make the trip worth his time.

Anyway, we arrived at the McDonald's in which the contest would take place. Right away, my fellow fresh-faced competitors and I were given a tour of the store (which didn't have the same layout as the one I was coming from). I sized up the competition while we walked; they all looked nice enough.  There was one girl in particular that I didn't like right away, but only because she was pretty. (Let's call her Evie, short for Evil-Girl.)  Another girl I remember was sort of a Plain-Jane type, and she seemed to be too meek to be a threat to me. Still, I started to get really nervous. Was I going to be able to find everything in this new, familiar-yet-unfamiliar restaurant?

Suddenly, I came up with another reason to hate Evie. With a flip of her shiny, tight ponytail and a confident smile, she announced in an I'm-so-superior tone, "I don't know why I'm even taking this tour! This store is the exact same layout as the one I'm from. Everyone knows I'm going to win!"

And that was the moment my understandable insecurity bloomed into pathological hatred and distraction. Who the heck did she think she was?! What a snot!  I wanted her to die. (Just kidding, but I really did hate her.)

We finished our tour, and the competition was soon under way. I tried to put Evie out of my mind.

"Welcome to McDonald's! May I take your order?"

I did my best in Drive-Thru, making sure to answer every "Beep" within 30 seconds and get the food out the window within a minute or two. I cheerfully up-sold with, "Would you like fries with that?"  The contest judges stood by, making notes and keeping scores on little pads.  I felt pretty good about my performance, but I couldn't help but wonder how Evie was doing.  I hoped she was off in a corner, choking on a fry or something.

On to Lot-and-Lobby, cheerily wiping tables and bringing napkins to the old folks having their morning coffees, I couldn't help but hear Evie near by, competently performing her front-counter duties with grace. My blood boiled.

A little while later, I was at the Fry Station, busily boxing up those golden yummies. Plain Jane was nearby, pushing a mop bucket past the bun cart when the unthinkable happened. On the back of the bun cart hung a huge bag of ketchup. When I say huge, I remember it being about two gallons worth. (It was probably less, but that's how I remember it.)  As Plain Jane passed the cart, she somehow hooked the bag, and I watched as a flood of ketchup splashed out onto the floor. What a bummer!  I was too busy with my own task to stop and help her, but she didn't seem to need it; she quietly and quickly cleaned it up. I felt sorry for her; there went her chances, I figured.

Before I knew it, we had each gone through the various work stations and were waiting for the results. I don't remember that part, but I definitely remember the award ceremony.  My heart was filled with hope for a win, but moreso, a hope that Evie would lose. I wanted to see that smile wiped off her obnoxious face. A girl like that; so pretty, so confident conceited, deserved to lose, right?

I could only hope that I would place in the top three. I thought I'd done well enough, but could I really hope for 1st Place? Apparently not, because when they called out the winner for 3rd Place, I heard my name. My heart sunk.

What?! Third? Didn't I at least deserve 2nd?  My cheeks reddening, I plastered beauty-pageant-runner-up smile on my face to accept my award. That was hardly worth the trip!  I just wanted to leave.

[I'm sorry, I know I was being petty, immature, and snotty, but it was what it was.  This was long before therapy, after all.]

I had to sit there as they proceeded to name Jane the 2nd Place winner, and guess who took first? Yup--It was that beotch, Evie.

I actually wasn't that shocked that Evie took first. I reasoned that her confidence was clearly based in reality. What really impressed me was the fact that Jane had passed me right by and snagged 2nd, even after that ketchup debacle. I had been so distracted by my anger for Evie, my own immaturity and weak ego, that I never even noticed Jane sneaking past me like the infamous tortoise passing the sleeping hare. When that ketchup had dumped, she kept her cool; she persevered and barely broke a sweat. I knew she deserved to win.

Sometimes, it takes a loss to make a gain. I was so disappointed in myself for getting psyched out and letting my own insecurities interfere with doing my best. That day, I learned the true meaning of the expression, Keep Your Eye on the Prize.  I learned that I cannot allow myself to worry about what anyone else is doing. Rather, I need to just be the best me that I can be...

because if you do that, you'll always be a winner.

Monkey Monday

Yes, I do realize that gorillas are not considered "monkeys," but I couldn't resist using that title.

This post is sure to make you smile.
If you prefer being cranky on Mondays, better shuffle off.

I found this photo while looking for the source of the one that follows. Isn't it funny?

Apparently, some kid accidentally dropped his game into the gorilla enclosure.
(Doesn't look like he's gonna get it back soon.Haha)
For the source of the photo and the story, click here.

I can't remember why I stumbled upon this pic last week, but I was so glad I did.  Don't you just love it?

What's even sweeter about this photo is that, yes, it depicts the love between a mother and her child,
but what you may not know is this pair came together through adoption.

How cool is that?
(I sent it to Yaya.)

Have a great Monday :)

Friday Fragments, Episode #128

What a busy week! It's time to let loose with our fragments! Let go of all of the miscellaneous clutter in your mind, and then sit back and follow the fragmented road!

Our middle school will be putting on a musical production of The Wizard of Oz this spring. I'm not being biased when I say that our kids/directors put on incredible shows. The costumes and sets blow people away every year. We have a no-cut policy, so there's always around 200 kids in the shows, which are very, very entertaining and always fun. After the regular shows, the directors raise funds to take a small number of perfomers on the road to 2-3 children's hospitals, where they perform a modified version of the show for young patients and then donate money to the hospitals. This year, they will be having a magazine sale fundraiser to help the cause, so if you happen to need any renewals (or new mags), please hold off until I share details, okay? Thanks.

In case you were wondering, Kendall went back to school today and is doing a great job catching up already. I'm so proud of her. Thanks for the well-wishes!

Thank you, McDonald's for introducing the new Fruit and Maple Oatmeal. I love it! I am so grateful to finally have something guilt-free, healthy and delicious to order when on the run. I'd been avoiding trying the brown-sugar version (thinking you would probably add too much), but today I learned that you put the perfect amount of brown sugar in, and I appreciate that! Of course, I could probably choose something with less than 57 carbs for a meal, but I'm okay with that fact that most of them are "good carbs." :)

Did I ever tell you that I worked at McDonald's, back in the day, and that I once competed in the Northeast Wisconsin/Upper Michigan McDonald's "Decathalon" and came in Third Place? Now, don't get any wild ideas--There was NO running or other exercise involved. It was all about flipping burgers, waiting on customers, cleaning tables, etc. I learned a life lesson through that experience; one I have never forgotten. (One of these days, I'll blog about it.)

I'm really excited about a classroom project that has great potential for making a big impact on global awareness for my students. The trouble is we don't have easy access to similar-aged students in a 3rd world country. If you know anyone who might be interested in helping with this, I would be very grateful.

Okay, I've talked your ear off enough! Now it's your turn....(Friday Fragments posts only, please.) Have a great weekend! (And don't have any bad dreams in which you find yourself chased by flying monkeys.)

Out of the Mouths of Babes

I feel very disconnected from Blogland this week, so far--Kendall has been sick for three days, and I've been pretty busy with trying to help her, as well as trying to keep up during a very busy work week. Tonight, I helped Kendall with a big project and only sat down to do my own work (sub notes for tomorrow) at 10pm. Finally catching a breath, I decided to catch up on Facebook. When I read my boss's wife's FB update, I knew it had earned a special place on my blog:

On the way to 4K [preschool] today, Ava sees a man walking up his drive with the newspaper. She says, "Well I know what that guy is going to do." When I asked what...she replied, "Poop!" Guess you can figure out what her dad's routine is:)

Thank heaven for 4-year-olds :)

Monday Meandering

Well, I'm back to the "real world" of work tomorrow. Thought I would unload some randomness to start the new year.

***There'll be no reflection or resolutions here; I guess I just like to live in the here and now, rather than the past or the future. (Who am I kidding? I'm just too lazy.)

***The Green Bay Packers pulled off a win tonight to squeak into the NFL playoffs. As any Packers fan will tell you, it's a real bummer to get up on Monday morning after a loss and go to work. As any teacher will also tell you, going back to school on the Monday after Christmas vacation is a major drag. As you can guess, it's going to be a lot easier for me to get up tomorrow. (Thanks, Pack!)

***Kendall and I went with friends to see the movie, The Tourist, this week. I liked it just fine, but I can't tell you anything about it, because I have this strange "condition" that causes me to forget movies after I see them, unless I've seen then more than a couple times.  I do remember finding Angelina's beauty very distracting (for what that's worth). I've heard a lot of good reviews about True Grit, too, so that one is next on my list.

***I always read a book or two over Christmas and summer breaks. This time, I read ReThinking Homework: Best Practices that Support Diverse Needs. It's an eye-opening book that caused me to really think deeply about my homework philosophy. All teachers should read that book.  To learn more about it, read this and this.  I also read The Help, by Katheryn Stokett. I would rate it a 4 out of 5. The author did a beautiful job on this, her first book!  To read some interesting reviews on The Help, read them here at Amazon or Karen Zemek's review here.

***Last Tuesday, a handful of Kyle's college friends stopped by unexpectedly (around 10pm).  Always the perfect host/dad (of course) Mr.4444 insisted on preparing them a meal of grilled chicken breasts, mashed potatoes (boxed), and green beans.  On their way home, one of the kids sent a text:

"Mr. 4444, how do you manage to keep so much of the juice in the chicken?"

The reply... "Years of experience with breasts."

Ba-dump-bump!  He keeps me laughing, that man of mine...

Here's to a light-hearted week for each of you! :)

I've Still Got It!

Last week, the Difference Makers and I celebrated the end of the year by picking up a little garbage at a nearby park and then playing on the playground equipment for a while. (It doesn't matter how old kids get; they always love to swing and play on teeter-totters.) At one point, we were standing by the monkey bars, and I asked the kids if they could do a "penny drop." They had no idea what I was talking about. Now the last time I forgot how old I was and showed off with an old gymnastics stunt (a handspring), I nearly broke my wrist (seriously), so I was reluctant to climb up on that bar and demonstrate, but you know how "peer" pressure goes.

Plus, somebody had to show them how to do it!

I'm happy to report that the kids were very impressed, and three of them were brave enough to try it (but to terrified to really be successful). I think that's pretty cool :)

I'm also happy to report that I didn't break anything (though the backs of my knees were a little sore the next day). Better my knees than my ego, right?
