Ohhhh, Dad!

This girl here? She got asked out by a classmate, who made his request via a friend. Her reply?

"No. If he wants to ask me out, tell him to ask me himself."

My heart soared to hear this news. This girl has self-esteem. This girl raised the bar for this boy, and he met the challenge. This is Kendall's first "relationship" with a boy, because she is level-headed and has never thought it necessary to have a boyfriend. Smart Girl knew they were more trouble than they were worth in grade school and middle school, certainly. (Let's hope the same doesn't hold true with high school and that they are worth it.)

I'm not really worried. I said she has a good head on her shoulders, and she does. Now we only have to worry about him.

Just kidding. S is apparently a very nice, shy young man who gets good grades and is a dedicated athlete (with no driver's license and no cellphone.)

I'm not worried.

Mr.4444, on the other hand....He's been telling Kendall since she could walk that any boy wanting to date her will have to face quite a grilling upon first entering our house. He's made this pronouncement several times in the past few years, and Kendall is pretty sure he's serious. Mr.4444 called home from a business trip this week and asked her,

"What time is S coming over for his interview this weekend?"

"Daaaad, come on. You're kidding, right?"

"Of course I'm not kidding, Kendall. I'm as serious as a heart attack! Now, what time is he coming over?"

Kendall told me there is no way she's inviting S to come over; she's too worried about Mr.4444 embarrassing her.

I say, "Works for me!"

  1. Don't blame her for not wanting to invite him over. :0 The poor guy sounds painfully shy... :) I really wish that he WOULD come over though and I could see a tape of it. That would make a great sit com set up!

  3. Yeah Dad!!! I think boys who step up to the plate and meet the parents before they date the daughter is thoughtful and considerate of the family. My friends made sure this happened with their daughters (they have 3) and it certainly was an eye opening for the boys, but in a good way. The ones who didn't do it--the girls ended up not dating for long if at all. (I refer to school dating versus--out in public dating.LOL!) The boys who came to the house, they got to know the parents and you could see that the relationship at the home was warmer than if the parents just allowed them to just come to the door to pick up their date. Good luck Kendall....and I hope "S" comes to meet Dad!!

  6. I like this girl!

My friend once told me that her dates HAD to pick her up from the house and that she HAD to take a few minutes before being ready because her dad HAD to have a quick under-the-radar interview with the kid before they left the house. WOW!

  7. Having raised two daughters, I share in your husband's delight with this whole situation. I fondly remember those first introductions. Ahh, I can still feel the power.....and see the fear in their eyes.

It's good to be the dad.

  8. Pretty girl, like her mom.
The fun starts now. Let her be herself. She'll do alright.

And its ok to put a little fear into the boy. go dad!

  9. What a great girl and smart to boot! Isn't it our jobs to embarrass them?

  10. She is smart and beautiful and obviously has been raised right; well done!

  11. This is too funny! I guess scaring the hell out of the boy beats my husband's theory of locking the girls in the closet until they are 30...probably only because we don't have any closets with a lock! ha!

  12. I'm not sure I would have done what your daughter did. I was so insecure.

My dad frightened a lot of boys. LOL

  13. Good for her and good for Mr4444!!!

My husband keeps telling me that when our daughter is that age he will be buying a shotgun and inviting boys over to watch him clean it while he interviews them.

  14. At least Mr. 4444 won't be holdin' a shotgun while interviewing the young Mr. Shy. Yes, Hubby would always pull the big gun out to clean just in time for Charity's dates. Poor girl, it's a wonder she ever got married! Heeehehe!

    Have a fun day!

  16. Yay for Kendall! What a smart daughter you have raised (& beautiful, too!). I hope I can instill your wisdom into my daughters...any secrets? My dad always threatened to be cleaning his hunting rifles when dates would show up...maybe that's why I didn't date much until college! ;)

  17. New here but had to comment!
My hubby sounds just like yours. Hope my girls are as self assured and confident when they start diving into the dating pool:)

  19. Oh yes! As a mother that expected to meet every guy that dated my now grown daughters, I say there is nothing wrong with this. Right now it might seem such a horrible thing to the teenage daughter but some day she will thank you and see the value in all of this. If he is worthy he will think nothing of whatever you ask!

  20. That is awesome! My dad took out his rifle and cleaned it whenever a boy came to our house. It was intimidating to say the least. When I started dating my husband in college my dad mailed him a detailed questionairre. It is still framed in my parents house. LOL!

My husband is going to continue the tradition and insists that he will make any prospective boyfriends run an obstacle course in our front yard. They can date my daughter AFTER they have beaten my husbands time!

    Poor girl.

  21. I'm glad your daughter has confidence! I wonder where she gets it from?

  22. AHAHAHAHA! I love it! That's pretty much the same mind set hubby has about any future Princess Nagger prospects... If your hubby has a list of interview questions, please ask if he'll share for the future. ;)
