Singing in My City (Solo and Ensemble Edition)

Sundays in My City is a weekly theme hosted by one of my favorite bloggers, Unknown Mami. It's a wonderful collection of posts from all over the world. Today, though, I'm adding a twist to the title (as you may have noticed by my title.) I'm guessing Unknown Mami won't mind (she's very flexible, right U.M??)

In my city today, I am lazing around on the couch, but on Saturday, hundreds of kids from around our area descended on Tinytown to hone the ever-important life skill that is "putting yourself on display for everyone to critique!" (Yikes--Such brave kids!)

Kendall performed a beautiful duet and her solo piece, I Attempt from Love's Sickness to Fly. Mr.4444 and I were very proud. [I should mention that her song was a Class A (most difficult) song.]

Performers can earn a 3, 2, 1, or *1 (state) for their pieces. While Kendall would like to be going to state competition, she is pleased with her "1," which makes sense; she's always been number one in our book :)

[#1 Daughter, of course. We also have a #1 Son.]

For more about Sundays in My City, visit Unknown Mami, and tell her I said hi :)

P.S. Sorry for the crappy video quality--It might be because I used the zoom feature on my Flip camera?

  13. Oh how I remember going to Solo and Ensemble contest in Wisconsin growing up - - - - in fact - - - I think we sang in that same room, only back in the day when it was a CHALK board and not a white one.

Oh I do kid - - - about the same room, but NOT the terrifying experience.

One year, my two best friends and I sang "My Hen Has Laid an Egg" The entire chorus was "ka ka ka ka na" repeated over and over.

About two measures in, the judge laid his pen down and just stared at us. We were HORRIFIED - - - we thought we must be REALLY blowing it.

But - - - what to do but go on. So, we relaxed, sang and had fun with it.

When we finally saw our judging sheets - - - he said it was the most fun he'd had all day listening, and our marks were as high as could be.

So - - - maybe the moral of the story is, pick the most fun song on that list. I ASSUME there's still a list of song from which to choose. But who knows - - - I'm WAY too old for much of ANYTHING to still be done the way it was way back when.

  16. The video isn't loading for me tonight, so I'll catch it tomorrow. Those S&E performances are so nerve wracking. I remember doing those - both terrifying and exhilarating! Congrats to her :)
