Sundays in My City: Prayer Request

With the first day of school just around the corner, another tragic event has befallen one of my students.  This Sunday in my city, there are a couple of families who need your prayers.

A few days ago, 11-year-old G touched a power line with a metal pole.  He was flown to Milwaukee Children's Hospital and is in good hands, but he is facing an extremely painful, long recovery, due to significant burns across his entire body, but especially his chest. G's sister tried to pull her brother to safety and was also hurt. She, too, is in the burn unit, being treated for numerous exit burns to her extremities, and is expected to be released in a couple of weeks.

My student, Brennan, who was hit by a car while riding his bike on a country road July 29th has miraculously fought back from near-certain death but still has a long, long road to go.

I am also very worried about the cousin (and next-door neighbor) of J and his sister, who also happens to be Brennan's best friend. JW has had a horrific August, to say the least. He, too, is suffering and will need a great deal of support this school year.

These kids and their families are going to need an incredible amount of support and prayers. Thanks for all of your care and prayers so far. Please keep 'em coming...

PLEASE--Wear a bike helmet, and make sure your child does, too.  I have lately been stopping my car to talk to kids wearing helmets while bike riding (and those who are not).  I'm going to get a reputation for being "That crazy lady who obsesses about bike helmets," and I'm okay with that.

Teach your child about the dangers of power lines, too, especially if you do not have any near your home (because you never know when they will come upon one, at a friend's house or elsewhere).  A single conversation could save your child's life one day.

  3. Near tragic, tragic being not still alive. Sad that a young child will be spending painful months recovering. To an eleven year old the power lines just don't look powerful. What a shame.

Thankfully Brennan is fighting back. Keep us informed please.

  5. You know I am thinking about those kids and hugging my child close. I will share this on Twitter, FB, and Google+ too for prayers, and for those who need to remind their children about wearing helmets and the danger of downed power lines.

  6. Dear God,
I lift up Mrs. Fours' local children who are hurting, who are repairing, who are healing. Some summers seem to take their toll more than others, and it's hard to understand that any of this is your will.

I lift up their parents and family who must be exhausted from worry and care.

I ask that You guide the hearts and minds of doctors and their colleagues who are working to help them all heal.

And when they return to school one day, I ask that you guide the staff and students so each moment helps with that care and healing.

    Amen.

(If I don't do this, pray in the moment, when asked, I worry I'll forget. So I typed this out and read it to God. Prayer ADD is my weakness...I, too have a student who was injured this summer. Her grandparents' summer home in WI exploded, they both died, and she survived with injuries. She's meant to come back to school this week. Sydney.)

  8. Oh Wow! Your community has a lot on its plate. Lots of prayers being sent.

This reminds me of the time I found my then five-year-old daughter playing with the neighbors on the train tracks. After I finished, in a proud parenting moment, freaking out at her, she looked at me and said, "But Mamma, you never TOLD me I couldn't play on the train tracks!"

One of those things you just take for granted that the know!

I'm a bike helmet crazy lady too. Have you read Mic Hart was Here? Children's novel, by Barbara Park, maybe? Great book, but hard to read...bike helmet safety... important.

  9. Mrs.4444 my heart broke as I read your post. I will indeed keep these children along with the families in my prayers. Starting school is hectic enough by itself. I will be praying for you also. That you will have a wonderful year and a light to everyone you come across. God bless you!

  13. When I was 13, a school friend died after grabbing live wires. I always caution kids to be careful because they like to think they're invincible.
