Bad News and Good News

I was driving to Green Bay for an appointment when I got the call from Kyle. I haven't been talking on my phone in my car lately (trying to cut back), but since I knew he had a job interview, I decided to answer it. He told me that he was okay but had gotten in an accident back in Tinytown. He said that the police had been called and that everything was okay, but he needed me to call the potential employer to explain that he would not make the interview.

I hung up the phone and continued driving to Green Bay. I had (not thinking) figured I would still make it to my hair appointment. A mile or so later, my brain kicked in, and I realized that I really should go back to Tinytown and be there with Kyle when the police arrived. Five minutes from Highway 41 North, I turned around.

Fifteen minutes later, I arrived at the scene of the accident, where Kyle and the other young driver were still waiting for the police. Kyle's car got the worst of it, and the other driver's truck was not damaged at all. Attitudes were very good, under the circumstances. Thirty minutes later, I headed home.

Flipping on the radio, I heard some bad news; there had been a fatal, freak accident on Highway 41 North,
exactly between the exits I would have been driving, had Kyle not had his accident.

So, the car has seen better days, my poor kid will be paying more for insurance, and I need a haircut really bad, but there is definitely a silver lining.

Someone is watching over us...and we're very grateful.

  1. Oh my, Barb! If that had been me I would be singing that "Do-do, do-do" song, over and over. (Don't have a clue what the words might be but you know the melody I'm referring to I'm sure. Karma, good timing, yes -but also, someone up there loves you and is keeping you on His "watch out for" list. Something to be very, very thankful for, indeed!

  3. Now that's the kind of attitude I admire in people. Bravo!

A lot of people would complain about the damage to the car, the repair costs, the insurance increase, and everything bad that goes along with an accident. And sure, they are headaches, but the alternatives are even worse. You just never know why things happen. Something that has us scratching our heads and wondering why, can be the silver lining that we can only see if we have the right attitude about it. Who knows, his accident may have prevented yours.

My daughter learned a valuable lesson recently about paying attention while driving. She was banged up pretty good in an accident, totaled her car, her insurance will go up, and she got a ticket to boot. But now she is a much more cautious and mature driver because of it.....the silver lining.

  12. Wow. Glad Kyle is okay; you are correct -- cars can be replaced, and you can always wear a hat. :-) Saying a little prayer to the Gods of Fate.

  16. Good thing your instincts told you to turn around and make sure Kyle was okay.
There are days when I really need to listen to them better!

  18. We just don't know what the little detours in life will be saving us from, do we? Good thing to follow the gut instinct and like you did, turn around.

  19. I'm so glad that you & Kyle are safe! I try to remember stories like this when I'm running late & end up hitting every red light in town, or behind the slowest driver...sometimes there's a very good reason I'm "stuck".

  20. The Lord does work in mysterious ways. I reminds me of a day I was delayed at school and was just a little perturbed by it. On the way home traffic was stopped and backed up. The road out of town in very hilly and someone was passing at the bottom of one of those hills, fatalities occurred. Guess where I would of been it not delayed!

I'm so glad Kyle was not hurt and you are safe in need of a hair cut. I'm with ya, cars can be replaced.

Ya'll have a wonderfully blessed Wednesday!!!

  22. There are LOTS worse things than a wrecked car and higher insurance; LOTS. So glad that you and he are both safe. Watched over, indeed.

  25. Wow! Glad you are ok and your son, too! Strange how that happens...I try to remember that when I get behind someone who is driving slow....God may want it that way.

  26. I always say that if I am redirected or if I miss an exit that I was being guided out of harms way and that I should be grateful for the delay instead of upset. It's hard to do that in the heat of the moment, I have to admit.

Grateful that your family is OK, that's for sure.

  31. It's funny you say this (and in a good way!) I'm glad you guys are okay! I was driving home from somewhere last week, and decided to take Allisonville Road, and got directed by police into a neighborhood onto a major highway which I HATE taking. Come to find out there was a 5 car pile up on Allisonville, and if I hadn't of stopped at the gas station, I very well could have been in that 5 car pile up. Never know why things like that happen, do we?
