When Bruises Are Fun

When Kendall and I went into town on Saturday in Eagle River, we came upon an estate sale, so we happily picked up a bunch of stuff we "needed," including two beach blankets, an old volleyball, a camping rug, two nights worth of firewood, and a box of games, all for the amazing low price of $24. Inside the box was a vintage toy that thrilled me! Remember "clackers?"

As you can see from this video, clackers are a challenging toy to get the hang of. (Try to ignore the empathetic laughter on my part; it's just that I remember those bruise-inducing blows well.)

My kids are covered in bruises from playing with these all weekend, but they think the bruises are cool.

Sadly, clackers were discontinued in the 1970's, due to injuries sustained by children trying to play with them. Shocking!

  1. estate sales always make me a little sad but I have scored some sweet needed stuff at them before...I put some clackers in my son's stocking at Christmas and he thought they were great

  5. Oh yes clackers. They were the rage back in the 1970s during junior high. I remember kids clacking in the school hallways between classes. Your son's injury mirrored many kids who passed through the 70s - circle of life.

  6. ah, estate sales. where you can find such lovely toys as lawn darts so you can skewer your family and friends.

our school banned clackers because kids were playing them in the school halls and disrupting other classes. yes, there were kids who would get excused from class to play with those things. then they were deemed dangerous, though i don't remember anyone being hurt by them. those darned adults always overreacted. ;)

We always find great items in Eagle River or at the flea market in St.Germain.

  10. Oh I remember these!!! I had some too and when they clacked together there were sparks... Don't get your hand caught in that one because you might get a burn too. :) It didn't last long before it was tossed. :( It was fun while it lasted though....

  11. Shoot, I was just talking about these to someone... I can't remember who it was. I was trying to describe them - it's possible it was one of my girls. Because whoever it was, they were surprised that there was ever such a toy that was such a safety hazard..
