Racy Reading

Warning: This post may offend the sensibilities of some people. My 83-year-old mother lived through it, though, so you'll probably be okay.

Like most people, my sisters and I like to read, but my mom is a voracious reader. When I read books today, it's usually for professional reasons; I think I read just two fiction books this year, both on my phone. At my niece's wedding last night, the conversation (between myself, my mom, and two of my sisters) turned to books.

Michelle:  Have you heard about the book, 50 Shades of Gray?

Me: No, I don't think so. Well, it sounds a little familiar.

Michelle: What? Have you been living under a rock? It's all over the place. It's supposedly a can't-put-down book...kind of racy..."changing marriages" and all that.

Me: I do remember seeing a little about it now.

Mom: What's it about?

Me: Let's look it up on Amazon.

I proceeded to pull the description up on my phone and read it aloud from (with dramatic intonation):

.....Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.
Mom, enthusiastically: I might have to get that one from the library!

Michelle: Well good luck, Mom; there's probably a long waiting list for it.

Me: I might have to download the audio book for it!

Mary: Why? So you can have your hands free?

[Insert the four of us laughing uproariously]

Mom (a little breathless): Oh, my! Oh, my! You girls are making me blush!

[and, after we stop laughing again] What's the name of that book again?

  1. I heard about this one but don't like the slutty books so am skipping this--won't see a review of this one on our blog.

  2. The reviews for the books aren't that great. Apparently the writing leaves a lot to be desired. After reading the reviews, I decided to skip reading it; I'm going to stay with the freebies! :)
