Spread the Word to End the Word

A special ed colleague has partnered with a reg ed teacher this year to create something amazing; it's a mixed group that includes students with cognitive disabilities and an equal (or higher) number of neuro-typical students who work and play together to make a difference in their school. They are organizaing some really terrific initiatives together, and this post is about one of them: Spreading the Word to End the Word. The word is retard.

I'm not going to get on a soapbox and preach for an hour.
I'm just going to say that when you use the word retard in a way that puts someone or something down,
it's thoughtless and inconsiderate.
You don't have to agree with the position;
you just have to believe people when they say it's hurtful
 and act accordingly.

If you look retarded up in a thesaurus, the list of synomyms is awful.
Add your own name in amongst the list; go ahead,
 and you'll realize why it's so offensive to say that someone is "so retarded."

There are so many other words to choose from.
