Welcome to Friday Fragments, the easiest, most satisfying post to write--Just spill the randomness from your mind and link up! Like fall, the tree of my mind just drops it's leaves, full of color and a little cracked. Off we go! [Click the tab at the top of this page for more info about Friday Fragments.]
Kendall and I went shopping tonight for a Homecoming dress. Fifteen-to-twenty dresses later, we have a winner. It cost $130, and she paid for $80 of it with babysitting money. (Just thought I'd offer that info for the curious. By all accounts, that was a reasonable price for a dress not on sale, here in Northeast Wisconsin.) Stay tuned for pics.
This week, I had my first experience with a door-to-door steak salesman, and I'm still shaking my head. His pitch was, "I know this sounds weird, but we got a couple of steaks left, and the boss said to just get rid of 'em, so they're going for $2 each--Normally, they go for $15, so that's a great deal." Um....no, thanks. No offense to you steak salesmen out there--I'm just not buying steak on a porch.
For what it's worth, I recorded an audio post this week-It's the Rethinking Wrinkles post, and I also plan to record my Gifts from My Father, Parting Gifts (kind of a Part II post) this weekend. This variety should keep me content as I await a promised Vlog from Yaya!!! That's right--If you know her, you are elated to hear this news. If you don't, you'll thank me later, because that woman is delightful, and anyone who's read her blog misses her dearly. [She had to shut it down when the adoption of her son hit a snag, in part due to the blog.]
Followers-If you find yourself feeling down when looking at your count, remember this--It's not the numbers that are important. Who cares if you have a 100 friends if none of them really knows you? I say, count the number of relationships you've gained through blogging; those you know truly have an interest in you as a friend/human being. That's what blogging is really about. We get hung up on the stats sometimes, but in the balance of things-Ten years from now, nobody (including you) is going to care at all about how many "Followers" you had.
My favorite Friday Fragmenter last week was Caution, who wrote this little gem: ~My youngest boys put a black light in their room this week, and I shared their disappointment when the dog's white chest failed to glow. Almost makes me wish Kyle was a little stinker again! :) Enjoy your award, Caution!
Speaking of Kyle, he got a job today! The coolest part of the experience (for me, as well as for Kyle) was when the guy looked over his application and said, "I don't need to interview you--You've got the job. That, right there, tells me all I need to know," and he pointed to the words "Eagle Scout." Soooo validating! [Incidentally, he will be detailing cars for a local car dealer. He is thrilled.]
If you've got a Friday Fragments post, please link it up and visit other Fragmenters, who are always excited to welcome you :) Have a great weekend!
A steak salesman? That's a first!, wow, I'm so glad you stumble into all these intersting things!! The most interesting thing in my week was a new kind of mold on the peach I left at the back of the fridge, a new red/black colour :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings on your day!
We've had the Meat out of the Back of a Truck guy so many times I've lost count. Now our standard reply to ANY solicitor at the door is "we're vegetarians." Selling cleaning supplies? "We're vegetarians." ;)
ReplyDeleteReally? Door-to-door steak salesmen? What is this world coming to?!!
ReplyDeleteI've actually giggled a few times over that gem from Caution this week. Once when I was rubbing my kitties belly and looking at all of her white fur and another time when I was in the car. Funny how some things just stick with you.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you on the blog numbers - the people that comment all the time on my blog have almost become an extension of my family. I really do love my blogging family :) They are a great group.
Congrats on your son getting a job he's excited about!
Kristin - The Goat
Ahh.. how I've missed reading you.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to hear more about Yaya!
ReplyDeleteI love your advice about friends/followers. So true.
Congrats to Kyle!
Way to go, Kyle! You, know Sam just started cub scouts. How exciting!
ReplyDeleteWe had a steak guy come by a few weeks back. So weird. (And, we are supposed to be a NO Soliciting neighborhood.) I can't imagine anyone buying traveling meat!
Can't wait to see pics of Homecoming!
Great news about Yaya returning! She is so funny! I loved her videos! Congrats to Kyle--see, good thing you pushed him to get that Eagle Scout rank! That is so impressive that he got the job just from his resume.
ReplyDeleteCongrats Kyle! Can't wait to see Kendall dress and Yaya news awesome can't wait! Have a wonderful FRIDAY!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with the follower count comment, so TRUE!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!! :)
My parents have bought meat from the door-to-door guy. They are also still alive. I think their guy was from the country and butchered his own meat.
ReplyDeleteI would love to know what's happening in Yaya's life!
So the scout thing is going to pay off eventually for my boys????
Thanks for the award:)) If only you were my boss...
Ahhh, homecoming! That feels like just yesterday, when it was really 15 years ago. I bet she's so excited!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend :)
I've been shocked that ONE person actually reads my ramblings, let alone over 10. I've met so very many interestings, amazing people through blogging.
ReplyDeleteGood for Kyle! Hard work definitely pays off.
Your advice on followers, as we discussed once before, was a great revelation to me. As a new blogger I would jump around from blog to blog and think, "WOW, Those people are so popular and liked, I must be like them."
ReplyDeleteNow I just enjoy writing and I never really give "my numbers" a second thought! Thanks for the advice :)
I totally agree about the followers. It is the friendships and the quality of the comments they leave that is way more important than having big numbers.
ReplyDeleteFirst time for Friday Fragments...I just linked up. Nice to meet you. Can't wait to see the dress pictures.
Mimi
A steak salesman? That's a new one.
ReplyDeleteI remember my first homecoming dress for a long time. Despite my bro's assurances that homecoming was 'casual' it SO wasn't and I was dressed totally wrong (even if the dress was hot). Ah well, live and learn...and I think it's awesome that she paid for most of it with her own money. I can't wait to see it!
Your fraggin' well today.
ReplyDeleteOnce when 'Geek Son' was between jobs he worked as a steak salesman. It's kinda like the Schwans guy without the yummy treats.
It was his second week on the job and he went to a scheduled stop where the customer said " I don't want any steak today but I do want a kilo. My dear son walked away from the job that day!
You have a great TGIF today sweetie!!!
Homecoming is pretty soon, right? I bet she looks gorgeous and I want to see pictures!!
ReplyDeleteI so agree with you about the number of followers. Being real and getting to know each other as human beings and not just a tiny pic in a follower block is so much more rewarding and fun.
That "Eagle Scout" will come in handy throughout his life. It has done so for my husband!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear that Yaya is going to do a vlog. I've missed her!
I like your advice about followers. When I switched to WordPress I was really upset because my feed did not transfer to all of my followers and my stats went down. This week I have been going through one of the most difficult situations I have ever had to deal with and the outpouring of love and support from those that read my blog has been unbelievable. Who cares about the numbers? The numbers just don't matter.
ReplyDeleteI want to see the HC dress! And congrats to Kyle on his new job! The Eagle Scout is paying off! WooHoo!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad we didn't buy steaks, I understand the frozen little packages were not all that great quality (surprised?). He talked me into cheap hamburger patties (me=sucker) and they were awful.
ReplyDeleteI am so pumped you heard from Yaya, I'd love to know how things are going for her!!! I do miss her blog. And I think about her every time I see something really cool and orange :)
LOVE the leaf borders!
I tried the blacklight thing when I was a kid and it didn't work well at all. Most things didn't glow or so dimly you couldn't tell.
ReplyDeleteLove the autumn dividers.
TGIF... I had a visit awhile back (in FL)from a steak salesman... I've only got a couple less, selling them real cheap, but you have to spend $100 to get that special deal - only a few left, yeah right!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't buy that steak, either.
ReplyDeleteLOVE how you put the thing about the #s. SO TRUE.
Lol... I've been visited by the steak salesman before. Apparently they always use the same pitch because that story was the same thing the guys tell me. Now, I don't really mind the idea of buying steak door to door, but my concern is that there is always a reason the meat has become cheap... and steak, in particular, shouldn't be on that big of a sale unless something is wrong with it. If they were to say that they were from a local business and wanting to offer the neighbors a good deal, then I might consider it. ;)
ReplyDeleteYou know, the idea of not counting followers, but relationships instead is a very nice thought. Thanks for that!
love the header pics..I just put Tyler bug in cub scouts and I hope it is a life long thing for him...I can't wait to see the dress and The steak thing is funny ...last time I was driving home a man was selling them on the side of the east TX highway out of a VW van...Nope no thanks
ReplyDeletewell if you just wanted follower numbers you could have made a deal with the meat salesman. But then again would you really want a meat salesmen following your blog?
ReplyDeleteWatch out for fresh Illinois Asian Carp deals, we do have more than we (or anyone) want.
I didn't do my FF assignment yet but I have until the end of the day and will still get a grade - right?
First off, congrats to Kendall on her Homecoming dress -- especially because she contributed to the purchase. Good for her. And good for Kyle on his new job. Congrats all around!
ReplyDeleteThe steak salesman is a little scary. I think that $2 is a high price to pay for food poisoning!!!
Have a great weekend.

I'm so glad that you mentioned Yaya. I've thought of her and wondered how the process was going. Sounds like it's good.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Kyle. More good news.
And I agree with you about the number of followers. I see people who have hundreds and hundreds of followers and get 3,4,5, maybe a handful of comments on any given post, and I just wonder about that.
How wonderful that your son got that job. Hmm..steak salesmen at the door with special offers, definitely something to decline :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the reminder that it's quality over quantity when it comes to relationships.
ReplyDeleteAnd big kudos to Kyle. How are you doing with him being gone?
Yaya's coming back!!?? Yay!! I'm so excited to see her again! *Doin' the happy dance*
ReplyDeleteWe've only had those meat sales people once. Hubby almost bought into it, but we were poor at the time (thankfully!).
A vlog from Yaya?? Are you going to share it with all of us?? (assuming that she isn't getting to open the blog back up yet) I do miss her dearly!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Kyle on the job!
My husband used to sell steaks out of a truck. (before we were married) I still don't get it...there is no way I would buy steak off of someone's truck. Insane!!
woot! congrats to kyle! kendall's dress reminded me of my prom dress (seventeen years ago...). it was $130, but i got it for $80 on sale. i was late in getting a date, so i was later in getting a dress. can't wait to see pics of hers! =D
ReplyDeleteI am not really sure I enjoyed all the homecoming and prom stuff with my girls the way I should have. It was all very stressful back then. I will of course enjoy these moments with my grand daughters...my little second chances..
ReplyDeleteI so agree with you about the followers. It is quite ridiculous. I am going to spend time nurturing relationships and not stressing over numbers.
Hope you have a great weekend!
