Me, Myself, and I

This poem was written by an 11-year-old student this year.
(Yes, the same one who wrote A Peacock's Tale.)

I die inside as I walk down the hall
Plaster a smile on my face to hide it all
My heart is broke
It beats no more
It started on fire
I'm burnt to the core
I say hi to people as I go
My true feelings I won't let show
Life at home isn't what I want it to be
I hate myself. I hate being me.
I do good in school and act just right
but I'm afraid of going home at night
because then I'm there with me, myself, and I
It hurts so much, I think I'll cry.
Me, myself, and I.

(This, from a girl who says she just hates writing; "It's stupid.")

I'm gonna miss that kid.

  3. Don't worry--she is fine. She has her issues, but she has matured so much this year and developed trust--she's got a good support system, and as you can see, she does not keep in all inside. She did say that she can't wait for school to get out, though...but that means she's normal :)

  5. Ah, the pain of being a kid. Something we can all identify with, but I hope she can finally love herself. Sometimes it takes a while.

  6. Gosh, I hope I have her in high school. Those are the kids I love and who NEED US the most. She's the one I get up and go to work for every day. Bless her heart.

  8. Can you submit her stuff to a contest?

  9. No kid should feel afraid to go home at night - home is where you're supposed to feel safe, secure, loved.

That's a hard way to grow up.

    I wish her well.

  12. So heartbreaking, the feelings some of these kids walk around with everyday...

  13. Who'd a thought I could relate to an 11 year old?

  15. I'm glad you commented that she was fine. I still wonder with this writing but the positive spin is she has learned to express herself.
Speaking of that - blogging is such an expressive tool and so is singing. Maybe one of your singing relatives could take a shot at my parody of "I started a joke".

  16. I think I know why she hates it despite being so good at it. I read this quote recently: "A writer is somebody for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people." ~Thomas Mann

  17. Wow. I hope she continues writing, even if she balks while doing it. She could publish a collection of her poetry and be a best-seller, as (too) many others could relate.

I hope she keeps in touch with you!

  18. I wish I could have seen this side of my teachers when I was in school. The side that shows they actually noticed what I was writing/saying/doing. Maybe they didn't have that side and you're simply incredibly special. Either way, don't let this girl go. If she's turning this stuff into you, she trusts you. Keep her close. Keep in touch. It will mean the world to her in a few years. I still talk daily to the teacher who finally noticed me as more than just a student.

Thanks for being an amazing educator, person, etc.

  20. Amazing writing! I know that when we are kids, we feel & often, most don't express in this manner (or at all - unless it's acting out). Being able to express makes it much easier to heal. I used to do the same thing.

    Thank you for sharing this.
