Weekly Winners/Sundays in My City

In my city this week, it was windy and weird.
As usual, I kept my camera handy on my commute, and I was not disappointed, from the ride in at 6:30am...

....to the ride home at 4:30.  I can't get enough of this tree
and I can't decide which day's shot is better-- sunny....

or windy/stormy...

Do you see a tree header in my future? I do!
Visit Unknown Mami and I Am Lotus for more shots for around this beautiful world :)

Got a Fun Halloween Memory?

Okay. I'll start. I remember being a middle schooler bold enough to "egg" someone's house. (I know, you're shocked, right? I probably shouldn't tell you about that shoplifting incident.)

Anyway, since egging houses was new to me and my friend; this was my first (and last) time, we weren't exactly professionals. More than a little paranoid, hearts pounding, we stole a single egg from the fridge, knowing that taking more than one risked certain discovery. (Who knew that bleary-eyed mothers of nine children did not keep a tallies of spent eggs folded inside their bathrobe pockets?)

Carefully, we wiped our fingerprints off the egg in order to protect our identities. (Yes, really.)  Then, having trouble deciding which of two homes to egg, we cracked our missile in two and threw each half at different, adjoining houses. Feet pounding, lungs afire with adrenalin and crisp, fall air, we tore down the street to make our escape. Daring to look back after a half block or so, but continuing to walk (just in case!) we braced ourselves for a reaction and found ourselves...

....disappointed.

What?! No squealing tires? No flashing lights? No angry voices shouting into the night at children huddled in the bushes for cover? We were met only with anticlimactic calm; that, and a feeling that we were not cut out for lives of crime; it was boring (and just plain dumb)...

...so we went home and made omelettes instead. (just kidding)

This is a re-post from October 2007. I'm posting it by way of entering the SITS Girls' Halloween Past Canon Giveaway! Tiffany is very pretty and has a son who made an absolutely adorable swashbuckler a while back. The SITS Girls have some excellent Blogging Tips, and if you are looking to meet new bloggers and get traffic to your blog, these girls are the ones to hang out with! At the very least, you'll want to get in on that Canon giveaway, so what are you waiting for?! Dig up a memory and get over there!

Friday Fragments, Episode #118

Ah...Fall Break!  What a treat it is to have a little relaxation after a wild week of parent-teacher conferences, party planning, and teacher in-service. I've got plenty of randomness for you this week, so let's get to it!

If you're a Friday Fragments newbie, welcome! (Please click on the tab above to learn the in's and out's. Thanks!)

***In case you've been wondering, you'll find our Halloween Party recap here.  You can also read about my Wizard of Oz moment in windy Wisconsin here.  If you need a wonderful apple cider recipe, check out my mom's Spiced Apple cider recipe here. (I took it to work one day this week, and it quickly disappeared.)

***Speaking of recipes, you really should try this one out for Thanksgiving: Berry Mallow Bake is to die for. You have plenty of time to eat a whole pan yourself try it out before the big holiday!

***I decided to sew (rather than pin) the medallions onto my costume last week. What I'd like to know is why the heck someone decided that the eyes of needles were too big and needed to be downsized along with the economy. That is pure crazy.

***I found this photo from the Green Bay Press Gazette very funny!

***I was deeply moved by Tyler Perry's sharing of horrible, traumatic childhood sexual /physical/emotional abuse on the Oprah show this week. What an incredible man. If you get a chance to see his interview, you should; he is incredibly inspiring.

***My brother Tom goes around metal detecting, and he finds many valuable things.  Sometimes, he finds the original owners and returns things to them (wedding rings, for example)!  Recently, Tom found a silver, homemade initial ring with a cursive G on it.  He asked my sister Geri if she ever went to the beach at Dykesville when she was a teen in the 60s.  She said yes.  He mailed the ring to her, and guess what? It is her ring!  Can you believe it?  Pretty amazing.

***Coby's Baby A provided my Favorite Friday Fragments this week, one of which was:

This is the same kid who was pretending to feed me Cheerios from his pocket. Only he didn't have a pocket. So he reached down the back of his shorts, inside the underwear, pulled out his hand and said, "Here you go, Mommy. Eat these. They're yum." How could I resist? Pretend Cheerios from inside my son's underwear!

The award is yours this week, Coby! :)

To read the rest of Baby B's cute fragments, visit Finding Joy.

***I'm getting really used to the stupid Anonymous spam comments I've been getting every day. They all go along these lines...

"Thank you for your great post. You've helped me with my assignment. I will look into this further on Google."
"Please excuse my bad English. Please email me."
"I cannot view your blog in Opera. I hope you will fix it."

WTH? Of course, one cannot email Anonymous. I delete two to three of these comments daily and still haven't figured out their angle. Any ideas?

***My sweet, geeky nephew and his friends are super excited about their Halloween costumes this year. Are they planning to be ninjas? Star Wars characters? Zombies?  Nope. They are going as Steve Jobs, an Iphone, and Bill Gates. (Yes, I'm serious.)

***I didn't know Mike Rowe had a blog! I found it today while looking for cake decor ideas for Kyle's Court of Honor next week. Mike Rowe is an Eagle Scout, and he wrote on the subject here.  He also wrote a Letter to Eagle Scouts, which is excellent. (If you follow the instructions, he will even sign and send the Eagle Scout a letter of congratulations!)  Gee...I thought Mike Rowe was hot before I found his blog; now, he's even hotter! :)

Just Call Me Dorothy

If you live in the states, you know that the Midwest is experiencing some really freaky weather. Walking to my car after work today provided evidence of how crazy-windy it was outside.

As you may have noticed, I am rarely without my camera; I love taking photos on my travels, and my daily commute is no exception.  I figured with today's insane winds, I might get a good shot or two on my way home. It wasn't long before I saw a good photo op...

[Wisconsin winters are COLD and snowy; some families build little shelters like this to protect their kids from the elements when they are waiting for the school bus. Good thing this was after school!]

I stopped to take another pic of that gorgeous tree I so love and then continued on my way. I was driving down a narrow country road when suddenly, a huge trampoline came flying out of a cornfield and bounced on the road just a few car lengths in front of me! As if in slow motion, I thought to myself, "HOLY CRAP! This is like the Wizard of Oz!"

The flying "saucer" hit the edge of the road and then continued bouncing and rolling across it.  I braked and grabbed my camera, thinking, "If I'm going to die, I'm at least going to get a photo of it!" Unfortunately, I couldn't get my lens cap off fast enough to catch it in front of me, but I turned and snapped it rolling across someone's yard...

Here's where it stopped (temporarily, for all I know).

I did knock on a door to see if anyone could help me secure it somehow, but no one was home.  (I ended up calling my local law enforcement and reporting it; that thing could have easily put someone in the hospital (or worse!) or at the very least smash someone's livingroom window!)

I looked underneath it for pointy red shoes but didn't see any...

Feeling Chilly?

It's that time of year--light changing, leaves falling, a chill in the air. It's the perfect time to make my mom's Spiced Apple Cider, so that's what I did tonight.
Visit Mrs.4444 Cooks today to find a simple recipe that packs a ton of flavor and warmth to a cool, fall day.

Have a great day!

Party Recap 2010

Well, a good time was had by all at our annual Halloween bash.
First of all, I have to say that much of the work was done by my friend Dawn.

(Thank you, Dawn!! I hope you're feeling better today!
You were a real trooper, hanging in when you'd been feeling sick all day!)
To show you proof of how much Dawn helped, allow me to show you the dishes I'm returning to her....

Man, that girl can cook, and she did a lot more than cook, too; she also did a lot of pre-party shopping for me. I'm lucky to have Dawn as a friend, and I only hope I can think of a way to return her kindness.

Here's what Mr.4444 and I looked like (this is the "Hurry up-We-have-a-party-to-start photo, sorry.)

I loved my costume. Here's a better shot of it:

Incidentally, in the interest of full disclosure, while I do love our costumes (ease of ordering, true-to-size, quality fabric), I was disappointed to learn today that BuyCostumes apparently outsources their customer service. I called there today to get help leaving a review for my costume, and I might as well have been speaking in sign language for how well the operator understood my question. Very annoying.

Anyway, the costumes at our party were incredible, as usual.

Teletubbies look so cute when they dance together...

A favorite couple costume was this one...

In case you've been living on another planet, this is "Brett Favre" and the infamous reporter, Jen!

(BTW, if you haven't seen the SNL skit on Brett and No-Fly Jeans, you should check it out; it's pretty funny.)

My friend and co-worker, Sarah, came this year!
(She dressed as Amy Farah Fowler, from Big Bang Theory)

Thanks, Kristin, for the lips idea; it was hilarious! :)

Michelle and Heather weren't able to make it after all, but Mr. and Mrs. Weaselmomma did,
and they had more fun than is probably legal.

(Bless his heart--Dave learned that wearing heels all night is not fun.)

Here's hoping your weekend was as much fun!

Saturday Sampling, October 23, 2010

Welcome to Saturday Sampling, a collection of best posts from around Blogdom this week (with a few oldie-but-goodie posts thrown in).  This week, since I didn't win any Pulitzers, I took the liberty of linking up three posts that I read this week. I put stars by them, because they are perfect examples of why I created Saturday Sampling--They are excellent posts, and everyone should read them. You, too, are welcome and encouraged to link up anyone's post that moved you. (I will also add a star to any post that someone else raves about in the comments of this post.)

Remember, SS is a place to showcase your blog and your writing; if someone read only one of your posts this week, which one would you want them to read? If you didn't write anything special this week, link to an older post, or just sit back and read the ones here. To learn more about Saturday Sampling (and please do, if this is your first time here), click on the tab above.

*By the way, I will star posts that have been highly recommended by people other than the blog authors themselves :)

Here you go--Link Away!

Important!

This post cannot wait! I just found out that Mr.4444's mom was scammed today via telephone! Here's what happened:

"Kyle" called her, crying. He said, "Grandma, I need your help! I've been in a car accident and am in big trouble--I hit a foreign diplomat, Grandma, and they say I need $4000 for bail. Can you help me? I don't want mom and dad to know. I really need your help."

He even put the "police officer" in charge of the scene on the telephone. The explained that because "Kyle" had hit a foreign diplomat, it was complicated. He gave her the information for where to send the money.

Of course, Grandma 4444 did what any loving grandma would do--She hurried to the bank to wire the money! Thankfully, on her way home from wiring the money, her "crap detector," as Mr.4444 calls it) went off, and she called the real Kyle, who told her that he had NOT been in an accident and had NOT called her.

She raced back to Western Union and was able to cancel the transaction. She will get all of her money back, though some of it will be tied up for a few weeks.

Later in the day, the "court" person called and said something about how confusing the process is and he tried again to get her to go back to the bank. She hung up without letting him finish.

I'm writing this to implore you to warn any grandma/grandpa you know who could fall victim to this. This is not some email chain letter; it really truly happened today to Grandma 4444. She is a very capable woman with a good head on her shoulders. Clearly, her emotions got in the way of her fully-functioning crap detector for a while. Thank heaven it shifted back into gear in time to cancel the transaction.

The scary thing is that I warned both grandmas about this very scam a couple of months ago. I had heard about it and knew they were both vulnerable to something like this. I guess Grandma 4444 wasn't listening when I was talking! (Damned Dancing with the Stars!)

P.S. As long as I'm on here, I'm going to tell you something else that is important and completely unrelated: Dawn, of Bee and Rose is having a Spooktactular Giveaway, and you know how much we love Halloween around here, so I'm entering! (You should, too!)

Friday Fragments, Episode #117

It's fragging time again! What a great feeling it is to unload all of the random bit and pieces of the week. As usual, I'm running around like a chicken with her head cut off, so without further ado...

[If this is your first time, please visit the Friday Fragments tab above.]

***Have you seen the CSN reviews on blogs here and there? I confess to a little jealousy, so I was very to accept their offer to do a review of my own! Maybe I'll review a contemporary bar stool, or a blender to replace the piece-of-junk one I recently bought, or a fun toaster, like this:

I haven't decided yet, so ( for now) you'll just have to stay tuned.

***Browsing the book fair at our school, I noticed the category, "Graphic Novels." When I was a kid, my dad said graphic novels were dirty and not allowed in our house. I read them anyway, of course. I still giggle, remembering the over-used "his swollen member" in reference to...well....swollen stuff. I'm guessing there are still plenty of novels out there that are graphic. However, for those not already in the know, a "graphic novel" is basically a thick comic book.

***Speaking of books, I found a great one this week on the subject of teens, social thinking, and autism. If you're interested, check out Michelle Garcia-Winner's Socially Curious, Curiously Social.

***Very few people know this, but I've written a board book for babies. The "prototype" has been gathering dust in a cupboard for at least five years. I just don't know what to do with it. Any serious suggestions?

***From Tinytown Police Report (This totally cracked up!)

Owner of sick and aggressive cat in bathroom needed it out so house guest could use the bathroom without getting bit. Officer exhausted all means and finally had complainant go into bathroom and get cat. Cat appeared normal and was not at all aggressive. Officer advised the complainant if she thought the cat needed medical attention, it was up to her to take it to the vet or just continue giving it medication.

***Our annual Halloween party this weekend! Two of my favorite guests will arrive on Friday:  Weaselmomma and her husband, Weaseldaddy!  I'm also looking forward to hanging out with Michelle, of Honest & Truly and Heather, of Soft Skies.  This is going to be so much fun!!

Now it's your turn to unload the randomness of your week. [Non-FF links will be deleted] BTW, if you left a comment on my prematurely-posted FF post this afternoon, I apologize for deleting the whole post! :)

Scary Stuff!

Mr.4444 and I love Halloween. Can you tell?

I loved having an alter ego that year :)
This year, for our annual Halloween party, I'm going as this:
And Mr.4444 will be Marc Antony:

For what it's worth, we (and a neighbor) bought our costumes from Buy Costumes
(They have no idea I'm writing this, btw),
and we are very happy with the quality of the costumes!
Our purchases and deliveries have been seamless, too.
We highly recommend them!**

I'm also excited to say that Weaselmomma, Michelle (of Honest and Truly), and Heather (of Soft Skies)
are going to be joining the festivities this year!
(Stay tuned for some fun party pics!!)

What has been your favorite Halloween costume?

**UPDATE: Please note that I just called BuyCostumes for help with writing a review for my costume and am disappointed to say that they outsource their customer service.  I found the experience frustrating; the operator simply could not understand what I was trying to convey. That said, I will probably still use them in the future, as we were very happy otherwise. Just thought I would let you know...

Difference Makers

I recently started an after-school group called Difference Makers.  So far, I have just six members, and we've had only about five meetings, but I am already very, very happy about how it's going. Our goal is to simply "make a difference" in the world, and the kids are going to direct what that looks like. So far, we have:

*Secretly taken the trash out from 10-15 classrooms before the Buildings and Grounds staff could get to them (we wanted to brighten her day, since we knew she was worrying about a sick friend). We almost got caught, taking a load out to the dumpsters, and we had to suddenly drop the bags in the hallway (we heard her coming around the corner) and we booked it down the hall as fast as we could, of course, laughing our heads off from the thrill!
*Made a huge banner for a everyone to sign for a staff member with a terminal illness
*Cut/trimmed hundreds of Box Tops for Education (for the school, not for my homeroom, so keep 'em comin'!)
*Created a blog, Facebook page, and got our own email address
*Made signs for the school book fair
*Made some notes of encouragement to anonymously drop into random lockers throughout the school
*Volunteered at a local Red Cross blood drive

A beautiful thing about all of this so far is that none of these activities has cost us a dime, but the payoff has been priceless; these kids are so filled with sweet innocence, hope, and enthusiasm for helping others. I am loving it! Can you tell? [pic printed with permission from these two cutie pies and their parents]

As anyone who's ever volunteered regularly can tell you, you get far more back than you put in when you give a little of yourself for the benefit of others. I highly recommend that you get out there and make a difference, for others, and for yourself in the process!

Radio Flyer Fun

Remember the Radio Flyer wagon from your childhood?  My sister, Geri, sent an uplifting video about a couple in Alaska who make people smile every time they take a spin in theirs:

You really have to applaud them for their creativity and childlike spirits.  Something tells me those two are a lot of fun to hang out with! :)

Okay, I'll try putting the video in again:

Still the One

Today, I celebrate you, Mr.4444! I love you. I hope your birthday is as happy as you have made me :)

I remember doing the laundry with my sister, Judy, as a small child of 5 or 6 (yes, really.) We had an old-fashioned (even for that time, I think) ringer washer.

I remember the hot, soapy water that stung my fingers, burning them until I remembered to grab the wooden pole to retrieve the steaming-hot clothing. We fed them through the ringer into a sturdy tub full of ice-cold water. (Funny how that, too, stung my fingers.) Rinse, rinse, repeat. I remember a few times having to hit the emergency release, because my fingers got caught in the ringer--not fun.

As you might imagine, my hands were weathered beyond my years when I was young. I was a hard worker and wasn't so wimpy that I wore gloves, either, no matter what the chemical. (We didn't have any, anyway.)

In middle school, during which (if you're lucky) hand-holding comes with the territory (at the roller rink), every boy I ever skated with said, "Wow, your hands are rough!" (Thanks.) My boyfriends (2 or 3 max, I swear) in high school all commented on my dry hands.

"Yup; I know." Thanks.

When I first started dating Mr.4444 (in college), it was mid winter, and he had been working hard in the construction trade, outdoors. His hands were always red and a little chapped. The first time he held my hand, he exclaimed warmly, "Your hands are so soft!" and my heart melted; I knew he was the one for me!

Just kidding. It did melt, honestly (I almost cried) but there wasn't just one moment. There were many others...

....like the first time he took me out to a nice dinner and did not make me feel stupid for not knowing what to do with all of the silverware or for never having eaten a steak dinner before.

...and the fact that he always asked me what I wanted, rather than just assuming that he knew (at certain times that it's important to ask.)

...and the time I thanked him for not opening my mail, and he said, with a curious look, "Why would I do that? It has your name on it, not mine."

...and the time, when we were first dating, when I accidentally snapped off his new fishing rod in the truck door, and he said, "It's no big deal, really." (when he probably wanted to kill me.)

...and the time he listened to me tell a certain Christmas story from my childhood and I could see that he was barely listening, but he was totally taking me in, and he smiled and said, "You are really charming, you know that?"

So, yeah. My heart has melted many times over Mr.4444, and it continues to do so, even today.

Like when I come to bed on frosty winter nights with legs that haven't been shaved in weeks, and he says, "I'd rather they be furry than prickly."

And when he comes in from the garage saying, "I changed your wiper blades for you; they looked like they were ready," or "I saw your gas tank was low, so I went and filled it up for you."

Or when he puts his arms around me at night and tells me how he knows he "won the wife lottery."

So, yeah. Dry skin, hairy legs, driving the car til it's running on fumes...he takes me with all of my flaws and loves me the way I've always dreamed of.

I know what you're thinking--"Those are her flaws? Give me a break!"

Hey, it's my blog. I don't have to tell you about my real flaws. (Besides, he'll tell you I don't have any.)

Weekly Winners/Sundays in My City

This week, the landscapes in Wisconsin have been absolutely stunning! We're getting short on daylight, and since I've been giving Kendall a lot of driving lessons, I haven't had a ton of time for pics, but I pulled right over to take this one, on my usual way home from work. (I just LOVE this quirky tree!)

And on Thursday evening, I really hit gold. See if you don't agree...(These are completely untouched photos! The sky was really this color; I saw two other people pulled over, also taking pictures of these unbelievable skies!!)

I felt so blessed, gazing at these gorgeous colors. What gifts!  I also took the time to drink in the smaller things in life....

I've posted these favorites on my Posterous site, where I put only my most favorite photos. (There, you can click on them to make them really pop out.)

Ah, the fall colors...so soothing to the frenzied soul.  I'm going to have to keep these handy; with Parent-Teacher Conferences on Monday and Tuesday nights, I'm not going to be seeing much daylight for a while...

Visit Unknown Mami for more Sundays in My City colors from around the globe and I Am Lotus for other Weekly Winners!

[Click on the Saturday Sampling tab above for SS details and how-to's]

Here's the LinkyTool for this week. There's room for everyone, but as they say at Sam's Club, "One sample per customer, please."  Please link up just one of your own posts or any number of posts you found especially inspiring, amusing, or insightful on other blogs. I'm linking up three terrific posts that I read last week. Each one is very much worth your time.

Have a great weekend!

Friday Fragments, Episode #116

My fragments this week, to the disappointment of スタービーチ, will not be in a foreign language.
They will, however, be full of randomness.
Let's frag, shall we?!
[For more information about Friday Fragments, click the tab above.]

 ***
Dear スタービーチ,
In spite of the fact that I appear worldly, sophisticated, and highly intelligent, I do not speak Chinese (or whatever that language is.) If you'd like me to stop marking your comments as spam, try English.

***

Jeanie, of Living Consciously, wrote a very helpful fragment last week:

Sometimes, when I read an interesting comment on a blog, I want to go to the commenter's blog and see what else they have to say. That usually works out fine, but when I get to a profile and see that the person has three or four different blogs I get a little confused. (Well, first I wonder how they are able to keep up with so many blogs, and then I get confused.) How do I know which one is their "main" blog, or is there a "main" blog? Sometimes, I just read the one with the most recent post, but more often I just back out and move on because I don't like to be confused. Any Advice?

My advice to everyone with a Blogger profile:: Check it and pare your blog list down to the one you want people to come to most. When readers get to that one, you can have links to the others.  To fix this little problem, go to your Blogger Dashboard, then click on Edit Profile, and finally, Select Blogs to Display. You should be able to take it from there :) Thanks, Jeanie!

For those interested in the subject of autism in adulthood, this is a very interesting article:  No More Pity: The First Openly Autistic White House Appointee Speaks Out

***

Unknown Mami was at her fragmenting best last week when she posted this gem:

On Wednesday, Put Pie and I joined a friend and her daughter at the S.F. Zoo. It was a wonderful day, especially since admission was free. The only problem is that my friend got mugged in plain sight and no one did a thing about it, except Put Pie. Put Pie admonished the mugger and yelled, “No! No! No!”, while wagging a finger at him. Don’t worry, the assailant wasn’t armed, unless you count a beak as a deadly weapon.

***
Rebecca Belle, of Knit by God's Hands became my Favorite Friday Fragmenter last week when she posted this shot of her adorable nieces and a friend:

Rebecca, this week's award goes to you! Congratulations :)

***

"Mom, this is soooo scary!" exclaimed Kendall when accelerating to 45 mph during our first driving lesson since she got her "temps."  (Let's hope she keeps that respect for driving for the rest of her life.)

***

I discovered a parenting "error of omission" that we made with Kendall--Up until this week, she's had zero experience driving anything other than bumper cars at Bay Beach! No 4-wheelin', no boat driving, no golf-cart cruising, nothing. Hence, she is completely green when it comes to gas/break pedals and steering wheels. It never occurred to me that such experience would have been helpful. Oh well; she'll survive. Still, I thought I'd mention it to those of you with younger kids.

***

For what it's worth, I post Friday Fragments on Thursday nights; to get the most visitors to your FF post, it's best to link up on Thursday night or early Friday. Also, I just want to give a shout-out to fragmenters who often go out of their way to visit other fragmenters, especially the new ones. Thanks for being FF ambassadors! :)

Now it's your turn to share your FRIDAY FRAGMENTS. Link up your FRIDAY FRAGMENTS post (all others will be deleted) and pay a visit to a few new/old friends to say hi!  Have a great weekend :)

Thousand Words Thursday

I came across this photo of my brother Dennis and his two sweet daughters,
Mandy and Lauren, at a wedding a few years back.
If this picture doesn't say "a thousand words," I don't know what does!

Heard in the Classroom

In reading class today, we were teaching a lesson about Informational Text in the context of recipes.  Of course, we covered the risks of not reading the directions, misreading ingredient amounts, etc. To illustrate the point, I shared my Lemon Meringue Pie story, and many students had stories of their own to share about disastrous meals at their houses, but this one took the cake:

"One day, my mom was making supper, when she went outside to yell at my brother, and she burned our house down!"

Kind of puts my pie debacle on par with forgetting to butter the toast. Just call me Rachel Ray!

Does Jesus Like Baked Goods?

Mr.4444 and I didn't live in Wisconsin when we got married, so in the interest of convenience, we attended marriage prep classes at a Catholic church in tiny Hoopeston, Illinois. Their "report," I naively assumed, would be important in assuring that our own church would deem us marriage-worthy, and since we were living in sin at the time, I was a little worried. So, when I heard they were having a bake sale at an event, I decided to do a little butt-kissing by contributing a baked good.

Now remember, I was 26 years old at the time, and I didn't have a cooking blog. As a matter of fact, I had very little real cooking experience, but I did love to eat and figured that was all the prerequisite needed to bake the easiest pie I could think of, lemon meringue. No, I'd never made a pie before, but how hard could it be?

I went to the store and decided I wasn't ready to make my own crust from scratch, so I purchased Pillsbury ready-made pie crusts, as well as the other ingredients. Since the box included two crusts, I decided to make one pie for the church and keep one for us. (After all, we were hundreds of miles from home and our moms; homemade pie was not a frequent dessert in our house!)

I'd heard some people remark about how tricky making meringue was, so imagine my smug thoughts when I carefully placed my gorgeous masterpieces into the oven. After just 15 minutes, one could produce such gorgeousness? Wow!  When I took the pies out, they looked exactly like this (and yes, I had even made those pretty, fancy edges!)

I skipped to the church with one of the pies for the bake sale and beamed with pride as the church volunteer thanked me and placed the $4 price tag on my offering.  Assured that I had secured my place at the head of The Pearly Gates line, I headed home.

Later that night, Mr.4444 and I settled down to enjoy a piece of pie. I took my first bite, ready to learn what heaven tasted like.

Unless heaven tasted like glue, I knew immediately that there was a problem; the crust was sticky and gooey. I had no idea what I'd done wrong!  I called my mother-in-law to troubleshoot the problem.  Surely the crust had to be at fault; after all, I had followed the pie directions to the letter, pouring the sunshine-colored filling into the shell, whipping up the meringue to a perfect consistency, baking it the required 15 minutes.

"Fifteen minutes? Did you bake the pie shell before adding the filling and topping?"

"You have to bake the pie crust first?!"

CRAP! That meant some poor church supporter paid $4 for a pie made with raw pie crust!

There went my place in line...

Fortunately, I had been naive to assume that the church would give a care in the world to "reporting" our marriage worthiness to our church at home (they were just content to get paid for the marriage prep class.) Thank goodness we moved soon after getting married, and I never had to face anyone at that church again.

Of course, I've learned a lot about cooking since our Hoopeston days. Trust me, you really can't go wrong with any of my recipes on Mrs.4444 Cooks (provided you  read all of the directions!)

Sunday Snippet

No pics of our gorgeous fall colors to post yet; I hope to work on that tomorrow. Instead, here's a pearl of wisdom from Kendall, who is going to meet four children at a new babysitting gig today:

"I really hope they're little."

Why?

"Because kids are like puppies and dogs; you want to get them as puppies when you're a babysitter, because you can kind of "train them" to like you; if they're too old, you just don't know what you're going to get."

For her sake, let's hope they're at least house-trained.
